Most reconstructions of social order begin with young people’s outrage and impatience for change. The Civil War was itself provoked by people who refused to be enslaved running away from plantations and bondage—the vast majority of whom were under 30 years old.
Employment creates space for political education
Historically, autonomous groups of workers have used sites of employment as locations for education in general and for political education in particular. “Base Communities” of this sort (bigger than a family, smaller than a church—see Harold McDougall’s Black Baltimore) are necessary locations for planning, striking out, regrouping, and reflecting. They require some kind of economic consistency to be sustainable.
